Positions: Music staff

Gloria Dei of Downers Grove, a 1400-member congregation in Chicago’s western suburbs, is seeking music staff. This is a three quarter time position. We are willing to divide the position between people with the right skills seeking fewer hours.

Here are the five primary functions we identify. For purposes of calculating compensation, we are showing each function as a percentage of a 40-hour a week position – this is its Full Time Equivalent (FTE).

Traditional Instrumentalist (.2 FTE): Organist – Rejoice in our 1976 Schantz 39-rank pipe organ, substantially rebuilt in 2006 and featuring an all-digital control system. The congregation is accustomed to fine performance music and robust support for hymns and liturgical song. In addition to service playing, plan to develop and lead other instrumental ensembles and performances. Ideally, you’ll also develop the contribution of the handbell choir.

Contemporary Instrumentalist (.2 FTE): Band Leader/Keyboardist – Whether you’re leading from the Kawai acoustic grand or from the twin Yamaha Clarinovas, you’ll find our brand new sound system will support you well. We’ll expect you to form and lead an instrumental ensemble to play weekly, or, when necessary, to solo. Whether your definition of “contemporary” is more attuned to pop, gospel, jazz, folk, or praise, we look forward to the energy you’ll bring.

Traditional Vocal Music (.15 FTE): Choir Director – direct choral music for a seasoned choir of 25+ members, singing at one weekly liturgical service plus seasonal opportunities. This leader will also develop soloists and vocal ensembles to further develop our program.

Contemporary Vocal Music (.15 FTE): Song Leader – help the congregation join whole-heartedly in congregational song, and develop a vocal ensemble for the performance parts of the liturgical service. This leader will also develop soloists and other opportunities for participation.

Coordinate and Administer (.125 FTE): Music Director – Take the lead in collaborative worship planning, oversee the budget, licensing, library, and other administrative tasks, and provide for the care for the instruments and operation of the sound system.

Compensation is based on the guidelines of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, which reflect education, background, and experience. In addition to the usual non-cash benefits, we are willing to negotiate for certain additional support such as medical or retirement savings plans. Normally such additional cash benefits will not exceed 12% of the salary.

Please send a resume and a letter of interest to Dr. Michael Rothaar, senior pastor, at pastor.rothaar@gloriadeichurch.org. Be sure to specify which parts of this position suit your gifts. If you’d like to talk about the position or see a somewhat fuller position description, please call Pastor Rothaar at 630-968-6231, extension 101.
