The Metropolitan Chicago Synod met in assembly May 30 to 31, 2014, at the Tinley Park Convention Center, Tinley Park, Illinois. This year’s theme was “Into All the Word” from Mark 16:15

After devotions and the Order for the Opening of an Assembly, the parliamentarian was appointed, the agenda approved, and committees appointed. There were no elections at this year’s assembly.

The keynote address was given by Ms. Mikka McCracken, Program Director, ELCA World Hunger Constituent Engagement and Interpretation at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Her report explored the many ways that the ELCA, through its programs, reach out into the entire world. Ms. Jessica Nipp Hacker, ELCA Malaria Campaign Coordinator, shared up-to-the-minute information about the work in Africa.

After lunch and conference meetings, the balance of the afternoon included two sessions of hearings and workshops. Two resolutions were debated and passed:

• RES. 01-14 On Hunger and Poverty
• RES. 02-14 Solidarity with Those Experiencing and Resisting Harsh Anti-LGBTI Legislation across Parts of Africa

A Celebration of the Holy Eucharist to which all were invited concluded the day’s events.

Throughout the plenary sessions, participants heard eight mission moments, coordinated by the synod’s Mission Interpreter Network, telling the story of congregations and partner ministries making a difference in their local communities, nationally, and around the world.

After devotions on Saturday morning, Bishop Miller gave his report where he shared information about new Affiliated Mission Communities in the synod, and information about Open Hands, Open Hearts, the synod strategic stewardship campaign that a partnership between the Metropolitan Chicago Synod and Design Group International. It is designed to open the conversation about stewardship in a fresh way that will also focus on congregational stewardship first. (The PowerPoint of this report is available online, a video of the presentation will be posted, and a DVD mailed to congregations.) Ms. Mikka McCracken then gave the report from the churchwide office that included information about the ways congregations, the synod, and the churchwide office collaborate in mission, and an update on the Campaign for the ELCA

The 2015 budget was adopted as presented.

The day ended with a closing prayer and the Order for the Closing of an Assembly.
